Matthews, NC Artists Nancy CarterMATTHEWS, NC – Local artist, Nancy Carter, has brought this year’s Matthews Alive theme to life. The 2010 Matthews Alive theme is Volunteer Matthews. Each year the Matthews Alive Board of Directors holds a contest for area artists encouraging artists to bring the theme of the festival to life. Nancy Carter’s artwork has won the 2010 competition.

“Nancy’s artwork was chosen because it best represented what we are trying to celebrate this year – our volunteers – and their spirit of giving to our community,” said Jim Sander, Matthews Alive Chair.

Nancy’s Matthews Alive artwork features five people holding hands in a circle. The center of the circle is a star with a heart. “I wanted to show we are a community. The people represent who we are – people of all shapes, sizes and colors. The heart in the center depicts who we are in Matthews. We are a Town where volunteers help each other which is what we should all do always,” Nancy commented.

Nancy Carter has been a resident of Matthews for 13 years. She is a self-taught artist. Both of her grandmothers were artists so she grew up in a home with original artworks. Over the years she has developed a unique artistic style that leans towards realism, done with multiple layers and filled with details. She paints the things she loves the most in her life: children, flowers, animals, her neighborhood, places she enjoys traveling to and unique “finds” in her everyday life.

Nancy is a native of New Jersey and New York. She was an honor graduate from Montana State University where she earned a B.A. in interior design. She and her husband, Mark, are members of Matthews Alive Festival 2010 - Volunteer Matthews Theme ArtworkWeddington United Methodist Church. She is a member of Mint Hill Arts and she facilitates an “Art Life” group at her church as well as teaches a Bible Study in her neighborhood.

Nancy’s artwork for Matthews Alive will be featured on the event’s posters, advertisements, t-shirts and much more.

Matthews Alive will be held September 3-6 in Downtown Matthews. The overall mission of the Matthews Alive Festival is to give back to the local community by way of supporting non-profit groups from around our area that volunteer at Matthews Alive. Over the past 18 years the Matthews Alive Festival has contributed over $750,000 to the local community. For more information visit www.matthewsalive.org.
